The Simple present vs. the Simple progressive

We use the Simple present to state habitual actions and facts.

    Look at the following examples:

I study Anthropology at the University

    Peter speaks English

    I normally read historic novels

She usually takes the train to work

They often go out for dinner

Tom doesn’t usually wear ties for work

We use the Present progressive for actions that are happening now and for a certain time period.

    Look at the following examples:

I study Anthropology at the University — This semester we are studying language and dialects.

Peter speaks English — Peter is speaking in English on the phone to the head office.

I normally read historic novels — But right now I am reading an autobiography.

She usually takes the train to work — This week she is taking her car everyday as she has to leave early.

They often go out for dinner — This month they are not going out for dinner, they are saving money.

Tom doesn’t usually wear ties for work — He is wearing a white tie today because he has an important meeting.
